(Last Updated On: February 13, 2021)

Tulum’s beach has long been considered one of the best in Mexico. And, of course, there are the famous archaeological ruins to visit while staying there. Not to be missed out on this seaport fortress, which managed to survive 70 years after the Spanish conquest, is a must-see. Tulum, is also known for it’s spectacular luxury and Bohemian inspired hotels and retreats as well as a variety of top-notch restaurants. Overall, this popular Caribbean vacation spot is considered an “eco-chic” destination which is at the head of many traveler’s lists. Besides Tulum’s obvious perks, you should definitely add these two additional incredible things to do in Tulum.

Mystika…an Immersive Mystical Experience

My good friend Lenka, recently celebrated her 40th birthday. A big milestone indeed. I remember my special celebration fondly. To commemorate the occasion we decided to split the festivities in half. For the day portion we wanted to do something memorable so we decided to visit Mystika with my hubby and long-time friend, Erika. Wow…just wow! Mystika, offers an unique sensory and immersive experience for its visitors. Pepe Soho’s photography is designed to transport the viewer on a journey that connects you to the Mayan cosmos as well as highlight the striking beauty of some of Mexico’s natural sanctuaries. He also includes various images of horses and other breathtaking pictures coupled with interesting anecdotes and quotes.

Mystika isn’t just a Photo Gallery

Aside from spectacular photos, Mystika’s art installation provides the visitor the opportunity to transcend the boundaries of the here and now. Upon entering the 360 degree dome, as seen in the above image, you will enjoy a 4 minute wonderous video tribute which highlights aspects of the Mayan cosmos. We decided to view it two times since there was so much to take in. For those, who are unable to visit Mystika and enjoy this experience in real-time I leave you with the following:

Pepe Soho’s Photos are Truly Something to Behold

I had never heard of Pepe Soho until a local event popped up on my Facebook page. All it took was seeing a few of his pictures online before I knew that I just had to check out his gallery in Tulum. We spent approximately 1 hour browsing his photos, reading the accompanying anecdotes and taking part in three immersive experiences. What struck me most about Pepe Soho was his backstory. In 2011, he suffered an accident, which broke both of his knees after he fell off a horse. After, several surgeries, which affected his immune system, he was finally diagnosed with systemic candidiasis which resulted in extreme weight-loss, severe pain and a bout of depression.

Pepe Soho: One of Mexico’s Most Important Contemporary Photographers

Long story short in 2013 Pepe, after regaining mobility and his overall health, picked up a camera and started taking photos. Then, after completing his studies at several accredited photography schools, he started travelling to over more than 50 countries. During this time he honed his skills and developed his unique vision of the natural beauty that surrounds us with special attention paid to his native Mexico. Now, at 48 years of age he has come a long way since those dark days after his accident. With lots of awards under his belt and a dedicated fan base Pepe Soho is living every photographers dream.

What truly inspired me about my visit to Mystika, aside from spectacular photos and immersive experiences, was Pepe’s story. Perhaps, it is because my girlfriend Lenka, was celebrating her 40th, the same age that Pepe was when he embarked on his new career. And now at 48 (the same age as me) he is a celebrated photographer. In some wonderful way it made me realize that it is never too late to start something new and become the best version of yourself. That being said, let’s get back to the amazing photos that you will find at Mystika. I highly recommend you visit this place. Be sure to take your camera as there are endless photo opps available. And, at the end of your experience you can even buy some of his work.

SFER IK…an Interdisciplinary Creative Sphere

Our last stop of the day before heading to Puerto Aventuras for lunch was at SFER IK. This unique architectural structure encourages you to contemplate your surrounding and just “be” for the duration of your visit. There is something extremely relaxing and beautiful about this place. While staying in Tulum, I highly recommend a visit to SFER IK.
